Agriculture major priority of Govt, says FG

The federal government says agriculture, food and nutrition security are the major priorities of the government to enhance food production across the country.

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Muhammad Abubakar, made this statement on Tuesday in Abuja at a press briefing on the Long and Short-term measures that will ameliorate food production and supply disruptions by the recent flood incidents in the country.

Placing a premium on Agriculture as the integral part of the land space and its activities, the minister said that an agricultural-endowed and climate change-vulnerable nation like Nigeria must expect and manage risks like flooding, erosion, land degradation and disease outbreaks.

According to the Minister, the ministry in conjunction with relevant agencies carried out 2022 wet season agricultural performance survey of the country to guide its interventions.

On the ongoing activities to increase food production in the country, the minister said the ministry was collaborating with the Federal Ministry of Interior to improve security on farms through the deployment of Agro-Rangers across Nigeria.

Abubakar said Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) with other development partners had always partnered with the ministry to support emerging food production and mitigation of the impact of food disasters in Nigeria.

He stressed that agricultural development in the country was fast transiting from subsistence to commercial agriculture to attract youths and other investors, adding that the improvement in the sector was attributed to the synergy between the public sector, the private sector and development partners.

He said the Ministry was working with stakeholders to explore the window of domestic and foreign collaborations and investments in the nation’s development process of attaining food and nutrition self-sufficiency, enterprise promotion, employment generation and wealth creation.
