President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in his national broadcast to commemorate Nigeria’s 64th Independence anniversary, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to economic reforms and the fight against insecurity.

Speaking to Nigerians on October 1, 2024, the President acknowledged the current hardships but urged citizens to remain patient as his government implements reforms aimed at stabilising the country.

“We are aware of the struggles many face with rising living costs and unemployment. However, I assure you that sustainable solutions are in progress, and we are beginning to see light at the end of the tunnel,” Tinubu stated.

The President reflected on Nigeria’s journey since gaining independence in 1960, highlighting the resilience of the nation in overcoming crises, including the Civil War. He lauded the unity and strength of the country, saying, “Despite challenges, we remain a strong, united, and viable sovereign nation.”

On security, Tinubu expressed optimism, announcing significant victories in the fight against Boko Haram and banditry. He noted that over 300 insurgent commanders had been eliminated in the past year, leading to the restoration of peace in hundreds of northern communities. “We are winning the war on terror, and soon, our farmers will return to their lands, improving food production and reducing costs.”

Turning to economic issues, the President revealed that Nigeria had attracted over $30 billion in foreign direct investments in the past year. He also promised the swift approval of the ExxonMobil Seplat divestment, aimed at boosting oil and gas production.

In response to recent natural disasters, Tinubu announced a Disaster Relief Fund and the ordering of integrity tests on dams across the country. He further outlined plans to make farming more mechanised, including the establishment of a local assembly plant for John Deere tractors and other agricultural equipment.

The President also touched on youth development, announcing a 30-day National Youth Conference to engage young Nigerians in nation-building and policy discussions. Additionally, Tinubu highlighted ongoing government programmes such as the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) and the soon-to-be-launched Renewed Hope Labour Employment and Empowerment Programme (LEEP), which aims to create 2.5 million jobs annually.

As the address concluded, Tinubu urged Nigerians to remain hopeful and resilient, saying, “The road ahead may be challenging, but with your support, we will forge a path toward a brighter future for our nation.”

The President ended his speech by congratulating the Senate President and Chief Justice of Nigeria for being conferred with the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), alongside other national honours that will soon be announced.
