70-Year-Old Woman in Gujarat Gives Birth to First Child After 45 Years of Marriage
A 70-year-old woman from a small village in Gujarat, India, has given birth to her first child, marking one of the rarest cases of late-life motherhood in recent times.
Jivunben Rabari, who has been married to her husband Valdhabhai Rabari, 75, for 45 years, welcomed a healthy baby boy named Lalo after successfully conceiving through in vitro fertilisation (IVF). The delivery took place at a fertility clinic in Bhuj, located in the Kutch district of the state.
According to medical professionals involved in the case, the couple had remained childless for decades despite repeated attempts to conceive. Doctors initially expressed reservations about proceeding with treatment due to Jivunben’s advanced age and the fact that she had been postmenopausal for more than 20 years. However, after careful evaluation, hormone therapy was used to prepare her uterus, followed by the transfer of a single embryo.
The pregnancy reportedly progressed without major complications, and the baby was delivered via Caesarean section at eight months. Both mother and child were said to be in stable condition following the procedure.
While Jivunben’s exact age cannot be officially verified due to the lack of birth records—a common issue in rural parts of India—she states that she is 70 years old. If accurate, the case ranks among the most unusual examples of late-age childbirth, though it remains unverified when compared to documented records such as that of Erramatti Mangamma, who gave birth to twins at the age of 74 in 2019.
The birth has drawn widespread attention, sparking discussions around advances in reproductive medicine, ethical considerations, and the growing possibilities of assisted fertility treatments.
