The National President of the Alumni Association of Nigeria (AANI), Ambassador EO Okafor, alongside the National Executive Committee and the entire membership of the association, has extended heartfelt condolences to the governments and people of Borno and Kaduna States, following the recent devastating floods.

In a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary of AANI, Brigadier General SK Usman (rtd) on Wednesday,  the association expressed deep sorrow over the extensive damage caused by the floods, particularly in Maiduguri, Borno State, and Kafanchan, Kaduna State, citing a report from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) which describes the floods as a “humanitarian catastrophe.”

According to the statement, the disaster has resulted in the tragic loss of lives, destruction of homes, and farmland, creating significant humanitarian challenges and exacerbating existing security issues in the region.

The statement conveyed AANI’s deep sympathy for the victims, expressing hope that relief efforts from government agencies and humanitarian organizations will offer much-needed comfort and assistance to those who have lost loved ones and livelihoods.

The association further emphasized the urgency of recognizing the increasing threat of climate change, which has contributed to the severity of natural disasters like these floods.

In addition to extending condolences, AANI praised the efforts of the Federal Government delegation, the Nigerian military, and other contributors for their swift response and critical support during the crisis. “Your dedication and efforts have been a beacon of hope in these trying times,” the statement noted.

AANI also called for concerted action to support rebuilding and recovery efforts in the affected regions, urging Nigerians to rally behind those in need.
