The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi, says the deployment of modern scanners across key entry points has significantly reduced the need for physical examinations while improving the agency’s ability to detect illicit consignments.

Adeniyi made the disclosure after Customs operatives intercepted $2.2 million in undeclared cash at one of the nation’s airports, a development he described as evidence of improved intelligence and technology-driven operations.

According to him, the introduction of non-intrusive inspection systems has enhanced officers’ efficiency, minimized human contact, and closed gaps previously exploited by smugglers and money couriers.

He noted that while physical checks have not been completely eliminated, the scanners now handle “a greater percentage of screening,” allowing officers to focus on high-risk consignments flagged through risk assessment.

The seized funds were reportedly concealed in a manner aimed at evading declaration requirements. Investigations are ongoing, and the suspects involved are being questioned.

Adeniyi reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to transparency, border security, and compliance enforcement, emphasizing that the scanners—combined with data-driven intelligence—are helping to tighten controls across all customs commands.

He added that the NCS will continue to invest in modern tools and capacity building to ensure that Nigeria’s borders remain secure and that economic saboteurs have no hiding place.
