AI, Democracy Forum Examines Safeguards for Nigeria’s 2027 Elections
The second day of the AI and Democracy Forum 2026 opened with discussions on how Nigeria can regulate the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the 2027 general elections while protecting electoral integrity and public trust.
The plenary session, titled “Governing AI in Nigeria’s 2027 Elections: Safeguards, Accountability, and Electoral Integrity,” examined the need for clear regulatory frameworks, defined institutional responsibilities, effective risk assessments and accountability mechanisms to guide the responsible use of AI in the electoral process.
The session was moderated by Geoffrey Uzono of Channels Television and featured former Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) National Commissioner, Professor Okechukwu Ibeanu; Dr. Lisa Poggiali of the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES); Cynthia Mbamalu of Yiaga Africa; and Sani Suleiman of Paradigm Initiative.
Participants highlighted the importance of establishing clear standards and effective oversight to address risks associated with AI, prevent its misuse and ensure that emerging technologies strengthen rather than undermine the credibility of elections.
The discussions also emphasised the need for electoral institutions and other stakeholders to develop safeguards that promote transparency, accountability and responsible technological innovation.
With preparations for the 2027 general elections underway, the forum reinforced the importance of collaboration among electoral bodies, civil society organisations, technology experts and other stakeholders to ensure the responsible deployment of AI.
The session concluded with renewed emphasis on technology governance and institutional accountability as essential measures for protecting electoral integrity and strengthening public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic process.
