Air Chief Urges Future Military Leaders to Embrace Joint Operations, Strategic Leadership
The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, has stressed the importance of collaboration among the Armed Forces, describing synergy as a strategic necessity for achieving success in modern warfare.
Speaking during a lecture titled “Military Strategic Leadership: My Perspective” at the Air Force War College Nigeria in Makurdi on June 29, 2026, the Air Chief urged future military commanders to embrace strategic leadership, innovation and joint operations in addressing evolving security challenges.
The lecture formed part of activities for participants of Air War Course 12/2026, comprising senior officers from the Nigerian Air Force, Nigerian Army and Nigerian Navy, alongside officers from Botswana, Cameroon, Ghana and the Kingdom of Morocco.
Air Marshal Aneke said the increasingly complex nature of today’s security environment requires military leaders who possess foresight, adaptability and the ability to work seamlessly across services.
According to him, effective leadership extends beyond command authority to inspiring personnel, strengthening institutions and translating national strategic objectives into operational success.
“Synergy is not optional; it is a strategic necessity,” the Chief of the Air Staff said, noting that integrated planning and coordinated execution enable commanders to achieve results beyond the capabilities of any single service.
He explained that the deliberate integration of air power with land and maritime operations remains essential to tackling contemporary security threats and enhancing mission effectiveness.
Highlighting his command philosophy, the CAS said his vision is centred on building a highly motivated, professional and mission-ready Air Force capable of delivering effective air power in close coordination with other security services.
He said the approach is being pursued through mission-focused training, personnel development, innovation, strategic partnerships and sustained operational readiness.
Air Marshal Aneke also underscored the importance of proactive planning, stating that strategic leadership depends on policy foresight rather than reactive decision-making.
He urged participants to cultivate strategic thinking, ethical leadership, emotional intelligence and a commitment to continuous professional development, stressing that investment in personnel remains the foundation of operational excellence.
The Air Chief further encouraged stronger cooperation among the Armed Forces and partner nations, describing trust and interoperability as key pillars of successful joint operations.
The lecture concluded with an interactive session during which participants exchanged views with the CAS on strategic leadership, future warfare and joint military operations, reinforcing the Nigerian Air Force’s commitment to developing leaders capable of addressing emerging national and regional security challenges.
