Akpabio, UK High Commissioner Seek Stronger Parliamentary Ties, Investment Opportunities
President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has called for stronger parliamentary cooperation between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, with emphasis on legislative exchanges, institutional partnerships and increased British investment in key sectors of the Nigerian economy.
Akpabio made the call when he received the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr Peter Vowles, during a courtesy visit to his office at the National Assembly in Abuja.
The Senate President said Nigeria and the United Kingdom shared a longstanding relationship built on history, mutual respect and cooperation, noting that both countries could achieve more through stronger democratic institutions, expanded economic opportunities and closer engagement.
He emphasised the importance of strengthening relations between the Nigerian National Assembly and the British Parliament, particularly through exchanges between lawmakers and the sharing of legislative experiences and best practices.
According to him, closer engagement with members of the British House of Commons and the House of Lords would provide valuable opportunities to improve legislative processes, strengthen parliamentary institutions and enhance the capacity of lawmakers to serve the Nigerian people.
Akpabio also acknowledged the enduring ties between the two countries and commended the warm reception accorded to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his delegation by King Charles III during their recent state visit to the United Kingdom.
On economic cooperation, the Senate President encouraged increased British investment in Nigeria, particularly in the oil, gas and mining sectors.
He noted that the economic reforms being pursued by the Tinubu administration continued to create opportunities for investors seeking long-term partnerships and sustainable returns.
Akpabio also welcomed the British High Commissioner’s reaffirmation of the United Kingdom’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with Nigeria and supporting the work of the National Assembly.
He stressed that the relationship between both countries should extend beyond their shared history to deliver stronger institutions, deeper economic cooperation and tangible benefits for their citizens.
The Senate President reaffirmed his commitment to building strategic parliamentary partnerships that strengthen Nigeria’s democracy, advance the country’s national interests and contribute to sustainable national development.
