American Missionary Alex Barbir Confronts President Tinubu Over Plateau Attacks

An American Christian missionary, Alex Barbir, has publicly challenged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the recent deadly attack in Plateau State, demanding accountability following the killing of at least ten people in Jos on Sunday night, March 29.

The attack occurred in the Anguwan Rukuba community, Jos North Local Government Area, where heavily armed assailants on motorcycles opened fire on residents and set several homes ablaze before fleeing. The assault coincided with Palm Sunday, one of the most significant nights in the Christian calendar, adding a religious dimension to the tragedy. In response, the Plateau State government declared a state of emergency in the affected area.

In a widely circulated video on social media, Barbir criticized the president directly, accusing him of inaction amid recurring violence.

“They just murdered over ten people, innocent Christians on Palm Sunday. Tinubu, where are you as your people are slaughtered in the night? You stay in Aso Rock doing absolutely nothing. You allow your people to be killed again and again. When will it stop? When will you hear the cry of Nigerians? Of Christians? You can no longer deny genocide. They are being slaughtered and you say there is no issue? You will regret what you are doing,” Barbir said.

The video has sparked significant online reactions, with many Nigerians supporting Barbir’s criticism while others debated his characterization of the crisis. Attacks on communities in Plateau State have been a longstanding issue, affecting residents across ethnic and religious lines. Sunday’s incident has reignited calls for decisive federal intervention in a region that has endured repeated violence.

As of this report, the presidency has not issued an official response to the attack.
