In 2011, actress and humanitarian Angelina Jolie made a quiet but impactful gesture that drew global attention when she donated more than $2 million to the Naankuse Wildlife Sanctuary in Namibia. The sanctuary is dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating animals affected by poaching, human–wildlife conflict, and habitat loss.

Jolie’s support was deeply personal. Namibia holds special meaning for her as the birthplace of her daughter, Shiloh, who was born there in 2006. According to those close to the project, the donation was Jolie’s way of giving back to a country that had played an important role in her life.

The funds helped strengthen Naankuse’s rescue operations, veterinary care, and conservation programs. Over the years, the sanctuary has saved and rehabilitated thousands of animals, including lions, leopards, cheetahs, and African wild dogs, while also supporting community education and conservation efforts.

More than a decade later, Naankuse remains active and influential in Namibia’s conservation landscape. Jolie’s contribution continues to have a lasting impact, highlighting how celebrity advocacy, when paired with sustained support, can play a meaningful role in wildlife protection and environmental preservation.
