Artificial Intelligence and the Nigerian Workforce: Opportunity or Threat to Jobs?

When 29-year-old Lagos-based graphic designer Emmanuel Adeyemi noticed that some of his long-standing clients had begun using Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools to generate logos, advertisements and social media content, he feared his career was coming to an abrupt end. Jobs that once took him several days to complete could now be produced in minutes by AI-powered software.

Rather than surrender to the disruption, Emmanuel made a different choice. He enrolled in online courses to learn how to use AI as a creative partner rather than view it as a competitor. Today, he combines his design skills with AI-powered tools to deliver projects faster, attract more clients and increase his earnings.

His story mirrors a global shift that is reshaping workplaces across industries. Artificial Intelligence is no longer a futuristic concept reserved for scientists or technology giants. It is already transforming banking, healthcare, education, agriculture, manufacturing, journalism and public administration. As Nigeria gradually embraces this technological revolution, one question continues to dominate conversations among workers, employers and policymakers: Will AI create more opportunities than it destroys?

The answer is both reassuring and cautionary.

According to the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025, employers worldwide expect AI and other emerging technologies to create about 170 million new jobs by 2030 while displacing approximately 92 million existing jobs, resulting in a net gain of 78 million jobs. The report, however, notes that nearly 39 per cent of workers’ core skills will need to change by the end of the decade, making reskilling and lifelong learning essential for future employment.

This suggests that AI is not simply replacing human beings; rather, it is redefining the nature of work. The greatest threat may therefore not be Artificial Intelligence itself but the inability of workers and institutions to adapt.

In Nigeria, AI is steadily becoming part of everyday economic life. Commercial banks now rely on AI-powered chatbots to handle customer complaints, verify transactions and detect fraud. Fintech companies use intelligent algorithms to assess credit risks and improve digital payment systems. Hospitals are experimenting with AI-assisted diagnostics, while universities are increasingly integrating AI into teaching, research and administrative processes.

The media industry has also joined the transformation. Journalists now use AI tools to transcribe interviews, analyse large datasets, monitor trends and generate preliminary drafts. Although these tools have improved efficiency, they have also sparked concerns about the future of newsroom jobs and the ethical implications of AI-generated content.

Beyond large corporations, Nigerian entrepreneurs are embracing AI to remain competitive. Small business owners now use AI-powered platforms to design marketing materials, automate customer service, manage inventories and analyse consumer behaviour. For many startups operating under difficult economic conditions, AI has become a cost-saving innovation capable of improving productivity without significantly increasing operating expenses.

Yet, beneath these promising developments lies a growing concern. Jobs involving repetitive, predictable and routine tasks are becoming increasingly vulnerable to automation. Administrative assistants, data-entry clerks, call-centre agents, cashiers, bookkeepers and some customer service roles may gradually shrink as intelligent systems become more capable.

This possibility is particularly worrying in Nigeria, where unemployment and underemployment continue to challenge economic growth. Every year, universities and polytechnics produce hundreds of thousands of graduates, many of whom struggle to secure decent employment. If AI adoption accelerates without corresponding investments in digital skills and workforce development, many young Nigerians could find themselves competing for a shrinking pool of traditional jobs.

However, history offers a different perspective. Every major technological revolution has displaced certain occupations while creating entirely new industries and professions. The Industrial Revolution reduced dependence on manual labour but generated manufacturing jobs. The computer age replaced typewriters but created software engineering, cybersecurity and information technology careers.

Artificial Intelligence appears poised to follow a similar trajectory.

New opportunities are emerging in data science, machine learning, robotics, cybersecurity, cloud computing, AI engineering, digital marketing and prompt engineering. These careers did not exist on a significant scale just a decade ago, yet they are now among the fastest-growing occupations globally. For Nigeria, whose population is largely youthful, this transformation presents an opportunity to position itself as a major supplier of digital talent to the global economy.

The challenge, however, is whether the country is preparing adequately for that future.
