At 27, Nigerian Disability Advocate Earns BSc, MSc, PhD, Turning Adversity Into Purpose
At just 27 years old, Shamsiyyah Umar, a disability rights advocate from Nasarawa State, has achieved an extraordinary academic milestone, earning a BSc, MSc and PhD while turning personal challenges into a mission to promote inclusion and opportunity for people living with disabilities.
Her academic record is remarkable. She graduated with a BSc in International Studies with a CGPA of 3.99, followed by an MSc in International Affairs and Diplomacy with a CGPA of 4.08, before completing a PhD in International Relations.
But behind the impressive certificates is a story of resilience, loss and determination.
At the age of 10, Shamsiyyah became physically disabled following a road accident on Christmas Day. Growing up, she encountered accessibility challenges, social stigma and misconceptions about what people living with disabilities could achieve.
However, her family, particularly her mother, refused to allow her circumstances to define her future.
Her mother consistently encouraged her to look beyond her disability, believe in herself and pursue her ambitions.
That encouragement became even more important during Shamsiyyah’s doctoral journey. Only a few months after beginning her PhD programme, she lost her mother—the woman who had been one of her strongest sources of support and motivation.
The loss brought grief and difficult moments, but Shamsiyyah continued her studies, holding firmly to the confidence her mother had instilled in her.
Her doctoral research focused on UNICEF’s contribution to inclusive education for children with disabilities in Nigeria between 2015 and 2023, further connecting her academic work with her commitment to disability inclusion.
Beyond the classroom, Shamsiyyah is also the founder of We Are Special Foundation, an organisation focused on promoting inclusion and creating opportunities for people living with disabilities.
Her journey was not without practical obstacles. She encountered university facilities that were not always accessible, including classrooms and offices located upstairs. Rather than allowing these barriers to prevent her progress, she advocated for the support and accommodations she needed.
Today, she is working to create even greater opportunities for people with disabilities through accessible technology, education, mentorship and access to essential services.
Her story goes beyond academic achievement. It raises an important question about how society views disability.
