Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially accepted his nomination as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress for the 2027 general election, pledging to lead what he described as a national movement to rescue Nigeria from economic hardship, insecurity and political intolerance.

Speaking on Wednesday at the Congress Hall of the Transcorp Hilton Abuja during his acceptance speech, Atiku expressed appreciation to party leaders, delegates and supporters for entrusting him with the party’s presidential ticket.

He described the ADC coalition as a platform built on “hard work, sacrifices and compromises,” aimed at protecting Nigeria’s democracy and restoring confidence in governance.

According to him, the party’s presidential primary demonstrated that democracy remains alive within the ADC despite what he called increasing pressure on opposition parties across the country.

“We demonstrated that while democracy is being strangled and suppressed by the ruling party, democracy is alive and well in the ADC,” Atiku stated.

The former vice president accused the ruling All Progressives Congress of undermining opposition parties through intimidation, political interference and alleged misuse of state institutions.

He also expressed concern over the detention of Nasir El-Rufai, describing the situation as politically motivated and calling for an end to what he termed the harassment of opposition figures.

Atiku alleged that security agencies and anti-corruption institutions were being used to pressure politicians into joining the APC, warning that such actions could threaten democratic governance in the country.

He further claimed that there had been attempts to interfere with the ADC coalition and warned that any move to undermine the party would be strongly resisted.

The ADC presidential candidate congratulated his fellow aspirants for participating in the primary election and urged party members to remain united ahead of the 2027 polls.

“This is not the time for celebration. No one was defeated because we are one party and we must unite to rescue our country,” he said.

Atiku assured Nigerians that the ADC would focus on accountable leadership, improved security, economic recovery, quality education, healthcare development and equitable governance if elected into office.

He added that the party would work with states to improve welfare standards and create opportunities capable of restoring hope and stability across the country.

The former vice president said the task ahead would require commitment, sacrifice and unity among party members as preparations intensify for the 2027 general election.
