Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide Reaches Highest Level in More Than 800,000 Years – Scientists

Scientists have reported that atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO₂) concentrations have risen to their highest level in more than 800,000 years, highlighting the rapid pace of climate change.

According to data from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), global carbon dioxide levels have now exceeded 430 parts per million (ppm), far above the natural range of between 170 and 300 ppm recorded throughout the Earth’s ice ages and warmer periods over the past 800,000 years.

The findings are based on the analysis of ancient ice cores extracted from Antarctica, which preserve tiny air bubbles that provide a record of the Earth’s past atmosphere.

Climate scientists say the current rise in carbon dioxide is unprecedented not only because of its magnitude but also because of its speed.

Researchers estimate that today’s increase is occurring about 100 times faster than the natural rise in CO₂ that marked the end of the last Ice Age.

Experts warn that increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases are contributing to global warming, rising sea levels, more frequent extreme weather events and other climate-related impacts affecting ecosystems and communities worldwide.

Scientists say the latest data underscores how dramatically the Earth’s atmosphere has changed within just a few generations, reinforcing calls for accelerated efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and transition to cleaner sources of energy.
