Attack on Military Personnel during Peace Mission in Okuama Community: Investigation Underway
On Thursday, March 14, 2024, tragedy struck as troops from the 181 Amphibious Battalion, stationed in Bomadi Local Government Area of Delta State, found themselves under attack during a peacekeeping mission to Okuama community within the same region.
The incident occurred amidst escalating tensions stemming from a communal crisis between Okuama and Okoloba communities in Delta State.
Reports indicate that the troops responded to a distress call, only to be surrounded and attacked by youths from the Okuama community. This violent encounter resulted in casualties, including the loss of the Commanding Officer, two Majors, one Captain, and 12 soldiers. Even the reinforcement team led by the Commanding Officer faced a similar fate, adding to the tragic toll of lives lost.
In response to this heinous crime, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), has swiftly ordered an immediate investigation and the apprehension of all individuals involved in the attack. The Delta State Government has been duly informed of the incident, seeking collaboration in addressing the grave situation.
Despite this setback, the military remains resolute in its commitment to upholding peace and security across the nation. Authorities have already made several arrests, and efforts are underway to uncover the motives behind this brazen assault. Further updates on the investigation will be provided in due course.
Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Acting Director of Defence Information, emphasised the military’s unwavering dedication to its mandate and assured the public that every effort is being made to bring the perpetrators to justice.
