Award-Winning Teacher Detained in Russia Over Alleged Abuse of Minors as Separate U.S. Case Sparks Safeguarding Concerns
An award-winning English teacher in Russia has been detained following allegations of serious misconduct involving two 12-year-old students. Prosecutors allege that Afina Simeonidis, 22, lured the pupils to her home in St Petersburg and committed unlawful acts described as sexual assault.

Court documents indicate that Simeonidis was “aware of the unlawful and immoral nature” of the alleged actions. She has been remanded in custody for two months after a court denied her request for house arrest. If convicted, she could face between 15 and 20 years in prison. The accusations relate to incidents said to have occurred in April and July this year when the two male pupils were at her residence.
According to a statement from the Vyborg District Court, investigators allege the acts were committed “for the purpose of satisfying sexual desire.” Reports suggest Simeonidis may argue at trial that one of the boys fabricated claims after she did not reciprocate his feelings. Authorities have not commented on potential defenses.
Simeonidis graduated last year from the Russian State Pedagogical University and previously received a presidential medal and a certificate signed by President Vladimir Putin for her contribution to the 2024 World Youth Festival. She taught at Gymnasium No. 74 in St Petersburg, which she once described as “my second home.” Her mother told local media the family would not comment while the investigation is ongoing.
The case has drawn widespread attention in Russia due to the suspect’s accolades and the gravity of the allegations. Investigators emphasized that child safeguarding remains a priority as proceedings continue.
In a separate incident in the United States, authorities in Florida arrested a physical education teacher at Central Pointe Christian Academy after allegations of sending inappropriate material to a 13-year-old student. Detectives said they obtained text messages, videos, and photographs after the teenager’s mother alerted police. The teacher, identified as Yezmar Angeanis Ramos-Figueroa, has been charged with distributing obscene material to a minor and transmitting harmful content.
Officials in both countries underscored the importance of vigilance and robust child-protection measures in educational settings as investigations move forward.
