In a historic moment witnessed by hundreds of officials and esteemed dignitaries from across Africa, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, a left-winger, took the oath of office on Tuesday to become Senegal’s youngest president.

Just 10 days after his release from prison, Faye secured a sweeping first-round victory, propelled by his promise of radical reform.

Amidst the grandeur of an exhibition centre in the burgeoning town of Diamniadio, near the bustling capital Dakar, the 44-year-old leader solemnly declared, “Before God and the Senegalese nation, I swear to faithfully fulfil the office of President of the Republic of Senegal.”

Faye’s ascension marks a significant moment in Senegalese politics, signalling a new era of change and hope for the nation.
