Benue State Joins National Sexual Offenders Register as Centre LSD Strengthens SGBV Prevention

The African Centre for Leadership Strategy and Development (Centre LSD), in partnership with Benue State’s Ministry of Justice and Public Order, has begun the process of adding Benue State to Nigeria’s Sexual Offenders Register.

This initiative, part of the Side-by-Side Movement for Gender Justice scale-up project, aims to strengthen the state’s capacity to track and respond to sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV).

In a press statement, Mr. Essien Nyong, the Side-by-Side Movement’s focal person for gender justice at Centre LSD, emphasised the significance of this milestone in the fight against gender-based violence.

“This initiative is a key step in ensuring accountability and enhancing protections for victims of gender-based violence in Benue State,” Nyong stated, adding that the initiative will also support the Humanitarian Tracking and Monitoring Team and the SGBV Prevention, Advocacy, and Response Committee in Benue.

Through capacity-building workshops, Centre LSD aims to equip stakeholders with the tools needed to manage the Sexual Offenders Register and respond effectively to cases of humanitarian trafficking and SGBV across the state.

These efforts, supported by the Side-by-Side Movement for Gender Justice—a global initiative bringing together faith and community leaders for gender equality—have been in progress since 2018 to ensure a safer, more just society.

Centre LSD invites the public to stay informed about the project’s progress on social media: Facebook (@centrelsd), Instagram (@centrelsd), and Twitter (@centrelsd).
