Betta Edu Empowers 500 Market Women With ₦50,000 Each in Calabar
Former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Dr Betta Edu, has empowered 500 petty traders and small-scale market women in Calabar, Cross River State, with ₦50,000 each to support their businesses and improve their livelihoods.
The empowerment programme, organised on behalf of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, also brought together more than 5,000 market women from different markets across Calabar for a women’s mobilisation outreach.
The beneficiaries received the financial support to enable them to restock their businesses, strengthen their purchasing power and expand their small-scale trading activities.
The event also featured gift items and consolation prizes, including deep freezers, blenders, toasters, luxury dresses and financial grants. The prizes were presented to winners of a lively dance competition organised during the outreach.
Beyond the financial assistance, the programme provided an opportunity for the women to interact, celebrate and express appreciation. Some participants offered prayers for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Bassey Otu, while expressing support for the APC.
Dr Edu, who is the Co-Director of the Women Mobilisation Directorate of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, encouraged the women to remain active in their communities and engage neighbours, fellow traders and households through grassroots mobilisation.
She urged them to work together to secure support for APC candidates in the forthcoming elections.
The outreach highlighted the importance of supporting small businesses and empowering women who depend on petty trading to provide for their families and meet their daily needs.
For the 500 beneficiaries, the ₦50,000 support offers an opportunity to replenish their goods, improve their businesses and return to their markets with renewed hope.
