In the foreword, Lt. Gen. Buratai describes national service as “the highest calling,” emphasizing that mandatory military service should be viewed not merely as a policy proposal but as a pathway to rebuilding collective duty, resilience, and patriotism among Nigerian youths. Drawing from over four decades of military service, he reflects on experiences ranging from counter-insurgency operations against Boko Haram to institutional reforms within the Nigerian Army.
Buratai recounts how disciplined and motivated forces were instrumental in reclaiming territories, restoring civil authority, and enabling displaced citizens to return home. He argues that national resilience cannot rest solely on a professional standing army, noting that structured youth service could strengthen cohesion, leadership, and security readiness across the country.
Commending Dr. Abubakar, the retired general describes the book as a “blueprint for fostering a stronger, more united Nigeria,” while acknowledging that mandatory service will naturally generate debate. He notes, however, that such discussions are essential for national growth and long-term stability.
Expressing gratitude, Dr. Abubakar described the foreword as a humbling honor and a powerful affirmation of the book’s relevance. He noted that the endorsement reflects the enduring value of mentorship and shared commitment to national development.
The book is expected to contribute meaningfully to ongoing conversations around youth engagement, patriotism, and security reform in Nigeria, positioning itself as a key reference for policymakers, scholars, and citizens invested in the nation’s future.
