CAN Faults Title of Ini Edo’s New Film, Calls “A Very Dirty Christmas” Offensive

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has raised strong objections to the title of a new movie produced by Nollywood actress Ini Edo, describing A Very Dirty Christmas as offensive and disrespectful to the Christian faith.

In a statement signed by CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, the association said Christmas is a sacred period that symbolizes purity, redemption, and hope, adding that associating the celebration with the word “dirty” undermines its spiritual meaning and insults the sensibilities of millions of Christians.

CAN expressed concern that the movie title was approved for public exhibition, questioning the role of the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) in allowing what it described as an insensitive title to pass regulatory scrutiny.

While acknowledging the importance of creative freedom in the arts and entertainment industry, the association stressed that such freedom should be exercised with responsibility, cultural awareness, and respect for religious beliefs.

The Christian body called on the movie’s producers and Ini Edo to reconsider the title, issue a public apology, and ensure that sacred religious seasons are treated with dignity and reverence.

CAN urged regulatory authorities to be more vigilant in balancing artistic expression with respect for Nigeria’s diverse religious and cultural values, warning that insensitive portrayals could deepen tensions and erode mutual respect in society.
