CDS Pledges Stronger Nigerian Military Role in UN Peacekeeping, Advocates Refugee Resettlement
The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa, reaffirmed the unwavering commitment of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) to United Nations (UN) peacekeeping operations during a high-profile meeting with the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mr Mohammed Fall.
During the meeting, General Musa emphasised Nigeria’s dedication to global security, calling for enhanced collaboration between the UN and state governments to facilitate the safe return of refugees to their communities. He also congratulated the UN on its 80th anniversary, acknowledging its pivotal role in fostering global peace and stability.Highlighting the significance of civil-military relations, the defence chief noted that fostering cooperation between security forces and civilian populations is more impactful in achieving peace than solely relying on military action.
Mr Fall commended Nigeria’s longstanding contributions to UN peacekeeping missions, describing the Nigerian military as one of the most dedicated forces in maintaining global security.

He urged for increased support towards regional stability, stressing that Nigeria remains a key player in UN operations due to its demographic strength and leadership role in Africa.
The UN envoy also lauded the AFN for its peacekeeping efforts in Africa, particularly its role in stabilising the North-East region of Nigeria. He was accompanied by Mr Trod Jensien, Head of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
The meeting underscored the mutual commitment of Nigeria and the UN to advancing peace and humanitarian efforts both within the country and across the continent.
