Chief of Defence Staff Urges Collaboration with EFCC to Combat Terrorism Funding
In a bid to bolster the fight against terrorism financing in Nigeria, General Christopher Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN), recently hosted Mr. Ola Olukoyede, the Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), at the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) in Abuja.
During the meeting, General Musa emphasised the importance of tracking terrorism funding as a crucial non-kinetic approach to combating terrorism globally. He commended the EFCC Chairman for his innovative use of technology in tackling corruption and economic crimes and assured him of the AFN’s commitment to upholding the nation’s democratic principles.
Highlighting the AFN’s zero-tolerance policy towards corruption, General Musa underscored the need for public office holders and individuals in positions of authority to uphold good governance practices to prevent economic instability and insecurity. He also discussed ongoing efforts to collaborate with stakeholders, including the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), to curb oil theft in the country.
“We must priotise the use of technology, such as census and CCTV cameras, to address corruption and insecurity effectively. I encourage you to maintain your commendable efforts in combating corruption,” he said, assuring him of the AFN’s support and cooperation.
In his remarks, Mr. Olukoyede reiterated the importance of collaboration in the fight against corruption, emphasising its detrimental effects on the nation’s economy and reputation. He urged the military and other security agencies to embrace cognitive responsibility and join forces with the EFCC in combating corruption.
Mr. Olukoyede highlighted the EFCC’s achievements in recovering significant funds and uncovering irregularities in contract awards and governance systems. He solicited the continued support and cooperation of the AFN to enable the EFCC to fulfill its mandate effectively.
The visit featured interactive sessions between senior military officers and EFCC officials, as well as the exchange of souvenirs and group photographs. Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the Acting Director of Defence Information, urged the public to be aware of the collaboration efforts between the AFN and EFCC in combating terrorism funding and corruption.
