COAS Calls for Stronger US-Nigerian Army Partnership to Tackle Security Challenges
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has urged a deepening of strategic cooperation between the Nigerian Army and the United States Army to effectively address Nigeria’s evolving security threats.

Lieutenant General Shaibu made the call during a courtesy visit by the United States Defence Attaché to Nigeria, Lieutenant Colonel Semira Moore, at the Army Headquarters in Abuja.
The COAS praised the US government for its continued support, highlighting how the Nigerian Army has benefited from American military professionalism and training. He noted that several Principal Staff Officers, including himself, are alumni of prestigious US military institutions, illustrating the strong impact of bilateral military engagement.
Emphasizing the importance of international partnerships, Shaibu called for expanded collaboration to enhance operational effectiveness, institutional capacity, doctrine development, and strategic capability, both in kinetic and non-kinetic operations. He stressed that such cooperation is vital for complementing Nigeria’s internal security architecture and promoting sustainable peace.
In her remarks, Lieutenant Colonel Moore reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to the partnership. She highlighted plans to strengthen existing ties and explore new areas of cooperation, including intelligence sharing, capacity building, joint operational planning, and support for troop welfare and humanitarian initiatives.
The meeting underscores the shared resolve of both armies to tackle complex security challenges while reinforcing professional and institutional ties between Nigeria and the United States.
