COAS Inaugurates AWCN Course 8/2024, Emphasises Importance of Training
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, has inaugurated Army War College Nigeria (AWCN) Course 8/2024, reiterating the vital role of training in operational success.

Speaking during the inauguration on Friday 16 February 2024, Gen Lagbaja stated that training is crucial for any security environment and that nations that invest in training will spend less on prosecuting wars.
He reiterated the importance of training in the Nigerian Army, especially in light of the country’s current security challenges. He pledged the army’s commitment to providing continuous training to its personnel.
The COAS noted that “the AWCN was established to bridge the training gap between tactical and strategic levels of warfare. In therefore encourage you, the participants to be creative and propose viable military options to enhance operational effectiveness”.
The Commandant AWCN, Major General Ishaya Maina, affirmed that the institution is a center of excellence renowned for its professional military education. He highlighted the importance of highly skilled operational level leaders in the contemporary security environment.
The AWCN Course 8/2024 comprises 66 participants from the Nigerian Army, 2 from the Nigerian Navy, 2 from the Nigerian Air Force, and 7 from an allied nation.
The inaugural lecture, titled “Military Leadership in a Volatile and Complex Operating Environment,” was delivered by former COAS Lieutenant General Tukur Yusufu Buratai (rtd).
