COAS Visits Tudun Biri, Expresses Regret over Drone Strike Incident (Pictures)
In a poignant display of empathy, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, visited Tudun Biri community in Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State following a recent unfortunate incident.
Accompanied by Principal Staff Officers from the Army Headquarters and the General Officer Commanding 1 Division, the COAS arrived in the community early on Tuesday, December 5, 2023.

A statement by the Director of Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu on Tuesday noted that during the visit, the Army Chief held a meeting with the Dangaladima Zazau, the District Head of Rigasa, Architect Aminu Idris, alongside other community leaders and members.
In a speech laden with emotion, Gen Lagbaja expressed deep regrets over the tragic mishap, describing it as a profoundly disheartening occurrence. He acknowledged the efforts of the Nigerian Army in conducting operations to sanitize the Tudun Biri area and neighbouring villages from armed banditry, emphasizing the ongoing commitment to making the region secure.
Gen Lagbaja recounted that the incident occurred during aerial patrols when troops misinterpreted the activities of a group of people, leading to an unfortunate drone strike. He personally visited Tudun Biri to witness the site of the mishap and extend sincere regrets and unreserved apologies on behalf of the Nigerian Army to the District Head, community members, and the entire Kaduna State.
The COAS announced a thorough inquiry into the incident to identify areas of deficiency that led to the tragedy. He emphasized that the findings would guide the Nigerian Army in addressing both human and Artificial Intelligence variables to prevent future occurrences.
Architect Aminu Idris, the District Head of Rigasa, acknowledged the integrity of the Nigerian Army in accepting responsibility for the drone strike. He urged the Army’s leadership to intervene and provide support to hospitalized victims and the grieving community. Contrary to earlier misconceptions, he clarified that Tudun Biri is a mixed community of both Muslims and Christians.
General Lagbaja extended condolences to religious leaders, including Chairman Jamaa’atu Nasru Islam, Kaduna State Prof Shafiu Abdullahi, and other clerics.
Additionally, the Army Chief visited victims at the Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital in Anguwan Rimi, Kaduna, expressing concern for their speedy recovery. He made an immediate donation of provisions to support the affected individuals and their families during this challenging time.
