A suspected coup attempt is unfolding in Benin’s commercial capital, Cotonou, after armed soldiers reportedly attacked the private residence of President Patrice Talon in the early hours of Sunday, December 7, 2025.

According to Beninese media reports, including the outlet TchadOne, the assault was allegedly led by Lieutenant Colonel Pascal Tigri, a senior military officer whose motives remain unclear. The attack occurred in the Le Guézo neighbourhood, prompting immediate alarm within security circles and raising fears of a broader power struggle.

The situation intensified later in the morning when Tigri appeared on national television—reported to be under the control of the mutineers—where he proclaimed himself the “chairman of the military re-establishment committee.” His televised address suggested that sections of the national broadcaster had been overtaken by the insurgent soldiers.

As of now, there is no confirmed information on President Talon’s whereabouts or safety, and the Beninese government has not issued an official response. Security forces loyal to the administration are believed to be mobilizing around key state institutions.

This is a developing story, and further updates are expected as the situation in Cotonou continues to unfold.
