Cristiano Ronaldo has sparked fresh speculation about a possible return to European football after reaffirming his determination to become the first player in history to score 1,000 career goals.

The 40-year-old superstar increased his career tally to 956 goals after scoring twice in Al-Nassr’s 3–0 victory over Al Akhdoud on Saturday. The brace also took his total goals for the 2025 calendar year to 40, underlining his continued consistency despite his age.

Speaking at an awards ceremony in Dubai, the former Real Madrid and Manchester United forward made it clear that his passion for the game remains undiminished and suggested that his future location is still open.

“My passion is high and I want to continue,” Ronaldo said. “It doesn’t matter where I play, whether in the Middle East or Europe. I always enjoy playing football and I want to keep going. I will reach the number [1,000 goals] for sure, if no injuries.”

Ronaldo’s latest achievement further cements his longevity at the highest level. He has now scored more than 40 goals in 14 different calendar years across his career — a record that highlights his extraordinary durability and hunger. His most prolific year remains 2013, when he netted 63 goals for club and country.

The Portuguese icon has previously acknowledged that the end of his career is approaching. In an interview with broadcaster Piers Morgan last month, Ronaldo stated that he believes he is one or two years away from retirement. However, his latest comments suggest he remains open to new challenges as long as he feels physically capable.

With his relentless scoring form and unwavering ambition, Ronaldo continues to defy expectations, keeping fans guessing about whether his final chapters could include a dramatic return to European football as he chases the ultimate milestone of 1,000 goals.
