The announcement, made on April 1, 2026, is part of a broader strategy to mobilise national support for the Games by bringing together top administrators, athletes, and stakeholders. Adeniyi’s inclusion highlights the growing collaboration between public institutions and sports development, positioning the Nigeria Customs Service as a key partner in advancing Nigeria’s global sporting ambitions.

The ambassadorial team features experienced sports administrators, including Mallam Saleh Ahmadu, Dr Amos Adamu, Chief Patrick Ekeji, Alhassan Yakmut, and Gbenga Elegbeleye, all of whom have previously served in leadership roles within the National Sports Commission. Their collective expertise is expected to provide strategic direction for Nigeria’s participation.

Also included are accomplished former athletes such as Olympic medalist Daniel Igali and Commonwealth champion Blessing Oborodudu, alongside other stakeholders and private-sector representatives. The mix of technical experts and athletes underscores a deliberate effort to ensure inclusive and performance-driven preparations.

Speaking on his appointment, Adeniyi commended the initiative, describing sports as a powerful tool for national unity, youth engagement, and international visibility.

“The success of Team Nigeria will depend not only on the athletes but on the strength of the support system around them. This ambassadorial initiative is a step in the right direction,” he said.

The 2026 Commonwealth Games, scheduled to take place in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23 to August 2, will bring together athletes from across the Commonwealth to compete in events such as athletics, swimming, boxing, cycling, and gymnastics, including fully integrated para-sports.
