Dangote Cement Plc is making strides in community health with the launch of a groundbreaking malaria intervention programme in Okpella, Edo State.
Set to unfold over two days starting from May 9th, the initiative underscores the company’s commitment to fostering Safer and Healthier Communities (SHC).
This move, part of a broader health-focused agenda, seeks to enhance access to healthcare and well-being for residents and neighboring communities.
The programme, spearheaded by the Sustainability and Social Performance Department, aims to address the alarming malaria burden in the region, where an estimated 1.2 million cases are reported annually, with a prevalence rate of 317 cases per 1000 individuals.
Mr. Wakeel Olayiwola, Head of Social Performance at Dangote Cement Plc, emphasized that the event will not only raise awareness but also provide practical solutions. Activities will include testing, distribution of treated nets, mosquito repellants, and counseling services, facilitated by public health officials.
This initiative builds on Dangote Cement’s earlier efforts, which saw the successful implementation of an HIV/AIDS intervention programme in transit communities in Benue state in 2022.
Dr. Igazeuma Okoroba, Head of Sustainability at Dangote Cement Plc, highlighted the collaborative nature of the programme, thanking partners such as the Medical Women Association of Nigeria, Edo State chapter, the Edo State Primary Health Care Development Agency, and Nigrowth Consults Services.
By aligning with Sustainable Development Goal 3_ Good Health and Wellbeing, Dangote Cement Plc reaffirms its dedication to supporting the health sector and promoting community welfare in Edo state and beyond.
