Dangote’s Billion-Naira Expansion Works at Kano’s Oldest Hospital Near Completion
The ongoing expansion works at Murtala Mohammed Hospital, spearheaded by Aliko Dangote, President of the Dangote Group, are nearing completion. This substantial investment, costing billions of Naira, is set to enhance the hospital’s facilities, particularly the Antenatal Units and other critical sections.
Dr. Bature AbdulAziz, President of the Kano Friends of the Hospital, expressed pride in Aliko Dangote’s intervention, describing it as a significant development for the state’s oldest and largest hospital. Murtala Mohammed Hospital, which delivers over 1,000 babies monthly, is receiving a transformation that aligns with the vision of Africa’s richest person.

During an inspection visit by the Friends of the Hospital, led by the Chief Medical Director (CMD), Dr. Usman shared that the hospital presently attends to no less than 16,000 women on pregnancy antenatal every month. The hospital, established in 1926 and initially operated by colonial masters for over 34 years, has witnessed successive administrations led by Nigerian qualified medical doctors.
Dr. Usman Tijjani emphasised the impact of Dangote’s intervention, highlighting the construction of additional maternity wards and other crucial units. This expansion is poised to reinforce the hospital’s status as the largest in Northern Nigeria.
Murtala Mohammed Hospital accommodates over 4,000 patients daily, conducts over 500 antenatal tests for pregnant women, and performs more than 200 surgeries each day. Dr. Bature AbdulAziz commended Aliko Dangote’s philanthropic efforts, tracing this act of generosity back to the family’s lineage, with Alhassan Dantata passing it down to Mariya Dantata and others.
Dr. AbdulAziz noted the collective joy among Kano residents, anticipating that Dangote’s interventions would attract patients from neighbouring states and even neighbouring countries such as Niger, Chad, and Cameroon.
Chief Medical Director Dr. Usman Tijjani emphasised that “the ongoing expansion would not only increase the hospital’s capacity for delivering babies but also double the number of patients seeking medical consultations. This visionary investment by Aliko Dangote is poised to elevate Murtala Mohammed Hospital’s healthcare offerings in the region,” he affirmed.
