Defence Headquarters Holds Strategic Retreat with Military Veterans, Reaffirms Commitment to Their Welfare

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has convened a one-day strategic retreat with the leadership of various military veterans’ associations, reaffirming its commitment to improving the welfare of retired personnel who served the nation.

The retreat, held at the Army Headquarters Command Officers’ Mess 1, Asokoro, Abuja, was organised under the leadership of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Oluyede, in collaboration with the Retired Army, Navy and Air Force Officers’ Association of Nigeria (RANAO).

The engagement provided a platform for dialogue, collaboration and renewed commitment to addressing issues affecting retired members of the Armed Forces.

Representing the Chief of Defence Staff, the Chief of Defence Operations, Major General Jamal Abdussalam, said the Defence Headquarters remains committed to maintaining open communication with military veterans, describing dialogue as the most effective means of resolving concerns affecting retired personnel.

He noted that the welfare of veterans remains one of the top priorities of the Defence Headquarters under the leadership of the CDS.

Major General Abdussalam assured participants that efforts are ongoing to implement the recently approved salary increase and the corresponding pension adjustments through the appropriate statutory processes.

He also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his continued support for members of the Armed Forces and urged veterans to remain patient while the necessary procedures for implementation are being completed.

The Defence Headquarters further assured retired personnel of its commitment to improving healthcare services, ensuring timely pension payments and enhancing welfare packages for military veterans.

Participants at the retreat also emphasised the need for stronger cooperation among veterans’ associations and encouraged retired personnel to continue contributing to nation-building by mentoring younger generations and supporting initiatives that promote national unity, peace and security.

The retreat reaffirmed the Defence Headquarters’ commitment to sustaining engagement with military veterans as part of efforts to recognise their sacrifices and improve their post-service welfare.
