Defence Minister Commends Alaba International Market Transformation, Hails Enterprise, Economic Resilience
The Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), OFR, has commended the transformation of Alaba International Market, describing the development as a remarkable demonstration of Nigerian enterprise, innovation, resilience and economic potential.
General Musa made the remarks at the Gala and Award Night marking the unveiling of the “New Face of Alaba” in Ikoyi, Lagos, where he praised the market’s evolution into one of Africa’s leading centres for electronics, technology and commercial activities.
The Defence Minister congratulated the leadership of the International Market Association Electronics (IMAE), particularly its President General, High Chief Dr Camilus Nnamdi Amajuoyi, as well as the Lagos State Government, led by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for their contributions to the ongoing transformation of the market.
He noted that the newly commissioned modern commercial complexes represent more than physical infrastructure, describing them as symbols of the vision, determination and collective efforts of the Alaba business community.
According to the Minister, Alaba International Market has moved beyond the traditional concept of a marketplace to become an important engine of economic growth, employment generation and technological advancement.
General Musa also commended initiatives within the market aimed at promoting quality assurance, supporting locally manufactured products and combating counterfeit goods. He said such measures would strengthen Alaba’s reputation as a trusted commercial destination with growing continental relevance.
The Minister stressed the strong connection between security and economic prosperity, reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to providing a secure and conducive environment where businesses can thrive.
He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, for his commitment to national security and economic stability, noting that sustainable development requires effective partnerships between government, businesses and citizens.
General Musa urged traders, manufacturers and entrepreneurs in Alaba to maintain their commitment to innovation, integrity and excellence, while encouraging them to continue creating opportunities and setting standards capable of positioning Nigerian businesses for greater global competitiveness.
The event also featured the recognition of individuals who have made significant contributions to the growth and development of Alaba International Market.
In his remarks, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by Deputy Governor Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, commended the Alaba business community for its significant contribution to the economic development of Lagos State.
The Governor described the market as strategically important to commerce, innovation and employment generation, while praising the resilience and entrepreneurial spirit of its traders.
He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to reconstructing the road linking the Alaba International Market, noting that the project would improve accessibility, enhance the ease of doing business and further stimulate economic activities within the area.
The Defence Minister further acknowledged the longstanding relationship between the International Market Association Electronics and the Nigerian Army, noting that the partnership dates back several decades and was strengthened through his involvement as a young military officer.
General Musa congratulated the entire Alaba business community on the unveiling of the “New Face of Alaba,” expressing confidence that the transformation would usher in greater opportunities, investment and economic growth in the years ahead.
