Defence Minister Lauds National Assembly for Supporting Military Operations
The Honourable Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, and his counterpart, the Honourable Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Muhammed Matawalle, have praised the Nigerian National Assembly for its oversight function and cooperation with the Ministry of Defence.
The ministers made this remark during the oversight visit by the House Committee on Defence to the Ministry of Defence on Friday, March 8, 2024.
They said that the harmonious working relationship between the executive and the legislative arms of government has enhanced the smooth running of the activities and programmes of the ministry, and enabled it to achieve modest successes in tackling the security challenges facing the country.
They reiterated the commitment of President Bola Tininu, to eliminate terrorists and insurgents from the society, and said that with the support of the National Assembly in terms of appropriation to the ministry, the Nigerian Military has recorded tremendous successes in the fight against banditry, kidnapping, oil theft and terrorism.
They also assured that the ministry will do everything within its power to ensure that the welfare and entitlements of the armed forces are adequately given at the right time, as a motivating factor for them in the ongoing fight against insecurity in the country.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, Dr Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, presented the context, achievements and challenges of the ministry to the House Committee on Defence.
The Chairman of the House Committee on Defence, Honourable Babajimi Benson, said that the purpose of the visit was to identify the areas of challenge with the view of assisting the ministry in actualising its mandate and also for a better planning strategies for 2024.
