Defence Minister Visits Maiduguri to Assess Renewed Insecurity in Northeast
The Minister of Defence, Christopher Gwabin Musa, on Tuesday visited Maiduguri to assess the renewed security challenges in Nigeria’s Northeast region.

He was accompanied by the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Mohammed Matawalle, in what marks his first official trip to Borno State since assuming office in December 2025.
The delegation was received at the Air Force Base by top military commanders of Operation HADIN KAI, who briefed the ministers on ongoing operations and recent developments in the fight against insurgency.
During the visit, the ministers also paid a sympathy visit to the Shehu of Borno, Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai El-Kanemi, following the recent triple bomb blasts in the state, reportedly carried out by Boko Haram.
The visit comes amid heightened security activity in the region, including a recent operation where troops foiled an attempt by Islamic State West Africa Province to abduct about 150 travellers in Biu. Security forces also reportedly neutralised at least 38 suspected terrorists who attacked a military base in Mandaragirau village.
Speaking during the visit, Musa strongly condemned the attacks, stating that such acts “do not represent any religion or legitimate cause.” He assured residents that the visit was directed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to review the situation and identify improved strategies.
“I want to assure the people of the state and the entire North-East that such occurrences may not happen again,” he said.
Matawalle also reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to ending insecurity across the country, stressing that efforts were being intensified to restore peace and stability in the region.
