Democracy Day: Governor Uba Grants Clemency to 97 Kaduna Inmates
The Governor of Kaduna State, Uba Sani, has granted clemency to 97 inmates of the Kaduna Medium Security Custodial Centre as part of activities marking the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.
The governor announced the decision on Friday, stating that the gesture was made in the exercise of the constitutional Prerogative of Mercy and reflects his administration’s commitment to justice, equity and compassion.
According to him, the beneficiaries were carefully selected based on eligibility criteria, with consideration given to vulnerable individuals whose socio-economic circumstances may have contributed to their incarceration.
Governor Sani said the decision was guided by the belief that every individual deserves a second chance and an opportunity to rebuild their lives.
He urged the released inmates to take advantage of the opportunity by embracing good conduct, acquiring useful skills and becoming productive members of society.
“I implore the beneficiaries to embrace this opportunity with responsibility, cultivate good character, and acquire skills that will enable them to positively impact society,” the governor stated.
He assured that the Kaduna State Government would continue to support efforts aimed at the rehabilitation and reintegration of former inmates into their communities.
As part of measures to improve conditions within correctional facilities, Governor Sani also directed the immediate deployment of essential medical supplies to the Kaduna Custodial Centre and approved the provision of an operational vehicle to strengthen the facility’s operations.
The governor expressed appreciation to the Judiciary, the Nigerian Correctional Service, the Legal Aid Council, security agencies, traditional and religious leaders, civil society organisations and the Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy for their contributions to the success of the initiative.
He noted that the clemency programme reflects the administration’s vision of balancing justice with mercy while creating opportunities for rehabilitation, redemption and social reintegration.
The gesture forms part of activities commemorating Nigeria’s 2026 Democracy Day and underscores Kaduna State’s commitment to promoting humane justice and inclusive development.
