The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with the European Union through democratic governance, constitutional reforms and enhanced parliamentary cooperation.

Kalu stated this during a strategic engagement with Heads of Mission of European Union member states at a reception hosted by the European Union Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Ambassador Gautier Mignot, at the EU Delegation Office.

According to the Deputy Speaker, the meeting underscored the growing relationship between Nigeria and the European Union, anchored on shared democratic values, institutional development, economic cooperation and sustainable development.

He briefed the diplomatic delegation on the ongoing constitutional review process being undertaken by the 10th House of Representatives, describing it as an effort to ensure that Nigeria’s Constitution reflects the aspirations of its citizens and responds to the realities of a modern democracy.

Kalu disclosed that the National Assembly is currently considering 45 Constitution Alteration Bills covering key national issues, including the establishment of state police, local government autonomy, electoral reforms, judicial reforms, fiscal reforms, citizenship, human rights, and women’s political participation through the proposed Reserved Seats Bill.

He stressed that the proposed amendments are aimed at strengthening governance, promoting accountability and advancing national development.

The Deputy Speaker also emphasised the importance of sustained collaboration between Nigeria and its international partners, noting that technical cooperation, knowledge sharing and parliamentary engagement would support the delivery of constitutional reforms capable of enhancing security, justice, prosperity and inclusive development across the country.
