DHQ Debunks Rumours of Appointment of Ag COAS, Reaffirms Commitment to Democracy

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has dismissed rumours about the appointment of an acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS), stating categorically that no such position exists within the Nigerian Armed Forces.

In a statement issued by Brig.-Gen. Tukur Gusau, the Acting Director of Defence Information, on Monday in Abuja, the DHQ clarified that the current COAS, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, is on a well-deserved rest, as part of his 2024 annual leave.

Gusau noted that Gen. Christopher Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), had spoken with Lagbaja shortly before the statement was issued.

He emphasised that the Nigerian Armed Forces are professionally managed, with all Service Chiefs, including Lagbaja, fully executing their constitutional duties.

Maj.-Gen. Abdulsalam Ibrahim, Chief of Policy and Plans, is providing regular briefings to the COAS, in line with standard military procedures.

“The COAS is hale and hearty and will soon resume normal duties at the end of his leave,” Gusau assured, urging individuals spreading unfounded rumours to desist immediately.

The DHQ also cautioned media outlets to verify their information before circulating fake news.

Additionally, the military warned those advocating for unconstitutional actions, such as a military takeover, to be aware that such acts constitute treason under the Constitution.

“The armed forces remain fully committed to protecting Nigeria’s democracy and stand loyal to President Bola Tinubu’s administration,” Gusau stated, adding that security agencies have been mandated to take appropriate action against individuals promoting unconstitutional changes.

The Defence Headquarters expressed appreciation to Nigerians for their support and prayers, affirming, “Victory is assured.”
