Dutch-Rwandan Man Sentenced to Life in Prison Over Role in 1994 Rwanda Genocide
A Dutch court has sentenced 66-year-old Dutch-Rwandan Eugene N. to life imprisonment for his role in the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.
Eugene N. was convicted of genocide and war crimes following a lengthy investigation into his alleged involvement in attacks against Tutsis in southern Rwanda.
According to the court, Eugene used his position as a local official to facilitate attacks and prevent victims from escaping. Judges also found that he threw a grenade into a crowd of people seeking refuge at a football stadium during the violence.
The court said his actions contributed to the persecution and killing of civilians during the genocide, in which hundreds of thousands of people were killed in Rwanda in 1994.
Eugene N. denied all the charges against him throughout the proceedings.
Rwandan authorities had sought his extradition in 2014, but Dutch authorities subsequently launched their own investigation after determining that he was living in the Netherlands. He was arrested in the country in 2024.
Following the conviction and life sentence, his lawyers indicated that they were likely to appeal the judgment.
The case underscores continuing international efforts to hold individuals accused of participating in the 1994 Rwandan genocide accountable, decades after the atrocities took place.
