EFCC Convicts ‘Prophet Sunday Koboko’ Over N136.4m Fraud
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Enugu Zonal Directorate, has secured the conviction of Godwin Sunday Ajuluchukwucheya, popularly known as Prophet Sunday Koboko, for obtaining money by false pretence and stealing.
Ajuluchukwucheya was convicted before Justice H.O. Eya of the Enugu State High Court sitting in Independence Layout, Enugu, after pleading guilty to a two-count charge involving N136.436 million.
One of the charges alleged that the convict, between 2023 and February 2025, obtained N136,436,000 from members of his church under the false pretence that he had won N30 billion in the Baba Ijebu lottery and that investors in an investment scheme would receive dividends based on their investments.
The offence contravenes Section 1(1)(a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006, and is punishable under Section 1(3) of the same Act.
Following his guilty plea, EFCC counsel, Assistant Commander of the EFCC, ACE II Rotimi Ajobiewe, urged the court to convict and sentence him accordingly.
Justice Eya subsequently convicted and sentenced Ajuluchukwucheya to one year imprisonment, with an option of a N500,000 fine.
The court also ordered the forfeiture of the convict’s landed property, covered by a Customary Certificate of Occupancy dated July 25, 1989, to the Federal Government through the EFCC.
The property is to be sold, with the proceeds used as restitution for victims of the fraud.
The case followed a petition by Mrs Ngene Nkiruka Jane, who alleged that the convict presented himself as a genuine man of God and claimed he had the power to resurrect her late husband.
She further alleged that the convict lured her into a fraudulent investment scheme and collected a total of N6.7 million for the alleged spiritual intervention and investment arrangement.
Another petitioner, Okey Uwakwe, alleged that Ajuluchukwucheya convinced him that he could spiritually influence his brother, who had travelled abroad since 1997, to return to Nigeria. He reportedly paid N6.231 million for the alleged spiritual work.
During investigations, several other members of the convict’s ministry reportedly came forward with allegations that they had been defrauded.
The EFCC also discovered that the convict allegedly lured members of his ministry into purchasing various products promoted as instruments of prosperity, including “miracle stickers,” “spiritual dragon” and “Holy Ghost Thunder,” among others.
