Emefiele’s Co-Defendant Tells Court He Lied in EFCC Statement in $4.5bn Fraud Trial

Henry Omoile, a co-defendant standing trial alongside former Central Bank of Nigeria governor Godwin Emefiele, has told a Lagos court that he lied in a statement he earlier made to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Omoile made the disclosure on Friday while testifying during a trial-within-a-trial before Justice Rahman Oshodi of the Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos.

The proceedings are part of the ongoing trial involving allegations of a $4.5 billion fraud against the former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor and his co-defendant.

During his testimony, Omoile told the court that the statement he previously gave to EFCC investigators was not accurate, admitting that he made false claims in the document.

The court had ordered the trial-within-a-trial to determine whether Omoile’s statements to EFCC officials were made voluntarily and whether they should be admitted as evidence in the main trial.

The outcome of the hearing is expected to determine the admissibility of the disputed statements as the high-profile fraud case continues before the court.
