Ethiopia Calls for Grant-Based Climate Financing for Africa at MIKTA Dialogue in Abuja
The Ethiopian Embassy in Abuja has reaffirmed Ethiopia’s commitment to practical climate action in Africa, calling for predictable, grant-based financing to help African countries address the effects of climate change.
The call was made by Ethiopia’s Ambassador to Nigeria, H.E. Legesse Geremew, while addressing delegates at the high-level MIKTA Climate Dialogue in Abuja.
The ambassador said Africa contributes only a small share of global greenhouse gas emissions but faces disproportionate climate vulnerabilities, stressing the need for reliable financial support rather than repeated promises.
He highlighted Ethiopia’s domestic climate initiatives, including the planting of more than 56 billion seedlings under the Green Legacy Initiative and the country’s energy grid, which he said is powered by more than 95 per cent renewable energy.
According to him, these achievements demonstrate that environmentally sustainable growth is possible in Africa when countries commit to practical action and invest in green development.
Geremew reaffirmed Ethiopia’s readiness to work with Nigeria, MIKTA partner countries and the African Union to strengthen continental cooperation ahead of the 31st United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP31) and the 32nd edition (COP32), scheduled to take place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in 2027.
He said Ethiopia’s role as the next host of COP32 would provide an opportunity to ensure that global climate discussions reflect Africa’s development priorities and realities.
The ambassador stressed the importance of achieving meaningful progress on climate financing, just transitions and long-term resilience across the continent.
He added that the roadmap from Antalya to Addis Ababa should deliver tangible financial commitments and practical outcomes that support African countries in tackling climate challenges while pursuing sustainable economic development.
