While congratulating General Oluyede on his appointment, Ambassador Mignot reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to supporting Nigeria in addressing its security challenges. He underscored Nigeria’s strategic importance to the EU, noting that 19 of the 27 EU member states maintain diplomatic representation in the country.
The ambassador highlighted several ongoing EU-supported non-kinetic initiatives across Nigeria aimed at peacebuilding and stability. He emphasized that the EU’s engagement with Nigeria goes beyond military support to include governance, political stability, and broader development efforts, particularly at a time of complex security challenges.
In his response, the Chief of Defence Staff expressed appreciation for the EU’s continued support to Nigeria, stating that he was well acquainted with the various contributions made by the Union. He welcomed the EU’s intention to deepen direct security engagement with Nigeria, beyond the existing framework that largely focuses on support to the Multinational Joint Task Force.
General Oluyede called for the fast-tracking of proposed defence collaborations, noting that Nigeria is currently facing multi-dimensional security threats and would greatly benefit from expanded EU support in addressing these challenges.
The visit reflects a shared commitment by both parties to strengthen cooperation in pursuit of peace, security, and stability in Nigeria and the wider West African sub-region.
