FCTA, FRSC Launch Joint Enforcement Drive Against Traffic Violations in Abuja
The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), in collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other security agencies, has commenced a sustained enforcement operation to curb traffic violations and restore discipline on roads across Abuja.
The exercise is targeting motorists who violate traffic regulations, including those who disobey traffic lights, drive against traffic, use unauthorised routes, park indiscriminately, overload vehicles and obstruct major roads, junctions, underpasses and pedestrian crossings.
The Mandate Secretary of the FCTA Transportation Secretariat, Chinedum Elechi, said the enforcement became necessary due to the growing disregard for traffic rules, particularly as the expansion of the FCT road network has increased traffic volumes across the city.
Elechi warned motorists that offenders would face the full weight of the law, stressing that the exercise was aimed at improving traffic flow, protecting lives and property, and promoting responsible driving culture across the nation’s capital.
Also speaking, the FCT Sector Commander of the FRSC, Corps Commander Tijjani Iliyasu, identified traffic-light violations, route violations, driving against traffic, excessive overloading and indiscriminate parking as some of the major offences being targeted.
He explained that motorists apprehended for applicable offences may, where necessary, undergo prescribed medical and psychological evaluations before prosecution in accordance with relevant road traffic regulations.
The authorities urged motorists, particularly commercial transport operators, to obey traffic lights, road signs and markings, use designated routes and parking spaces, avoid overloading and refrain from driving against traffic.
The joint operation is expected to continue at strategic locations across the Federal Capital Territory as the authorities intensify efforts to reduce traffic violations, ease congestion and enhance road safety for motorists, pedestrians and other road users.
The FCTA and FRSC have reiterated that compliance with traffic regulations is essential to building safer, more orderly and efficient roads in Abuja.
