FG Awards Contracts for Rehabilitation of 13 Police Training Institutions
The Federal Government has awarded contracts for the rehabilitation of 13 police training institutions across Nigeria, as part of efforts to improve training facilities and strengthen the capacity of the Nigeria Police Force.
The rehabilitation works are expected to be completed within three weeks, paving the way for the commencement of training programmes at the affected institutions.
The development was disclosed on Thursday in Abuja during the 160th meeting of the National Economic Council (NEC), chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima.
Shettima: Economic Reforms Must Deliver Jobs, Better Living Conditions
Speaking at the meeting, Vice President Shettima charged members of the Council to sustain ongoing economic reforms until their impact translates into more jobs, stronger purchasing power, increased business confidence and improved living conditions for Nigerians.
He stressed that government policies must go beyond announcements and produce measurable results that citizens can feel in their daily lives.
“There is no doubt that a serious government is measured by the matters it refuses to abandon. While attention may reveal a problem, continuity determines whether the problem yields to policy,” Shettima said.
The Vice President noted that improvements in revenue, debt management, production and investment would only become meaningful when they translate into tangible benefits for households and businesses.
“Macroeconomic progress must therefore continue its passage into jobs, purchasing power, business confidence and stronger subnational economies, because numbers become politically meaningful when citizens recognise themselves in their improvement,” he said.
Shettima also urged the Council to maintain focus on existing programmes and commitments, warning that newly introduced priorities should not overshadow unfinished responsibilities.
“Continuity is a form of accountability: yesterday’s promise still deserves a place on today’s table, and no new priority absolves us of an old responsibility,” he said.
NEC Endorses Revised Social Protection Policy
The Council also endorsed the Revised National Social Protection Policy (NSPP 2026–2030) presented by the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Bagudu.
NEC urged state governments to align their social protection policies, legislation, budgets and implementation plans with the revised national framework.
The policy provides a national framework for strengthening social protection coordination, financing, implementation, monitoring and accountability across the federation.
Under the revised framework, a National Social Protection Council is proposed to provide overarching oversight for the coordination and implementation of social protection programmes.
The Council will be chaired by the Vice President, with the Ministers of Budget and Economic Planning, Labour and Employment, and Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction serving as Vice Chairmen.
The Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning will serve as the Council’s Secretariat, while six governors, representing the country’s six geopolitical zones, will serve as members.
The Vice President said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had entrusted NEC with the responsibility of making cooperation across the federation more productive and ensuring that government policies are translated into outcomes that Nigerians can see and feel.
“A government that remembers earns the confidence of its people because its promises do not expire when the microphones are switched off,” Shettima said.
The latest decisions reflect the Federal Government’s continued focus on security-sector capacity, social protection and economic reforms, with emphasis on ensuring that government policies produce measurable improvements in the lives of Nigerians.
