FG Committee Recommends Dismissal of NSCDC Officers Over 37 Detainees’ Deaths

The Federal Government’s Independent Investigative Committee set up to investigate the reported deaths of 37 detainees in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Niger State has attributed the deaths to asphyxiation, describing the incident as preventable.

The committee blamed negligence for the incident and recommended the summary dismissal of officers found to bear primary responsibility for the deaths.

Presenting the committee’s findings, the chairman disclosed that the deaths occurred between September 16 and 17.

The investigation also established that physical assault and underlying medical conditions were not identified as causes of the deaths.

The committee further found that the operation leading to the arrest of the detainees was carried out without an operational order or approval from the NSCDC National Headquarters.

It recommended appropriate action against those responsible, with the aim of ensuring accountability and preventing a recurrence of the incident.
