The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Friday, June 12, 2026, as a public holiday to mark this year’s Democracy Day celebration.

The announcement was made on behalf of the Federal Government by the Honourable Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who said the day remains a significant milestone in Nigeria’s democratic journey.

According to the statement, June 12 is observed in honour of the courage, resilience and sacrifices of Nigerians whose struggles helped shape the country’s return to democratic governance. The government noted that their legacy continues to guide the nation’s democratic values and institutions.

The Minister reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening democratic principles, including the rule of law, transparency, accountability and inclusive governance. He stressed that the administration remains dedicated to upholding these ideals without compromise.

He further assured that the Ministry of Interior, in collaboration with relevant security agencies, will maintain adequate security measures nationwide to ensure a peaceful holiday period. He noted that a stable and secure environment remains essential for democratic consolidation and national development.
