The Federal Government, through the National Agricultural Development Fund, has launched Phase I of the North-West Zonal Farm Input Support Programme (FISP), distributing 100,800 bags of fertiliser to 25,200 smallholder farmers across Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Kebbi and Jigawa states.

Speaking during the flag-off ceremony in Katsina, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, described the initiative as a strategic intervention aimed at boosting food production, strengthening rural livelihoods and advancing the food security objectives of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

According to the minister, each of the five beneficiary states received 20,160 bags of fertiliser for distribution to 5,040 registered farmers in partnership with the All Farmers Association of Nigeria.

Kyari said the programme is designed to bridge productivity gaps among smallholder farmers while supporting local fertiliser manufacturers to expand production, create jobs and contribute to the growth of Nigeria’s agricultural sector.

He noted that the intervention builds on previous government initiatives, including the AgGrow-1 programme, which connects agro-processors with registered smallholder farmers to improve market access and enhance value chain efficiency.

The minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to achieving sustainable food security, stating that ongoing agricultural interventions are helping to increase productivity, stabilise food prices and ease inflationary pressures across the country.

“Food security is not won in a single day. It is won season by season, farmer by farmer, input by input. Today, the North-West has taken its turn,” Kyari said.

The Farm Input Support Programme is expected to provide critical support to farmers during the current planting season and contribute to increased agricultural output across the North-West region.
