The Federal Government has signed a concession agreement for the deployment of a contactless biometric passenger verification system, known as VPASS, across Nigeria’s domestic airports.

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, disclosed that the agreement was signed on behalf of the Federal Government following the necessary approvals from the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC), the Attorney-General of the Federation, and the Federal Executive Council.

According to him, the initiative is part of ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening aviation security, improving data integrity, and enhancing revenue generation within the aviation sector.

The VPASS system is designed to eliminate inconsistencies in passenger records that often arise from discrepancies in airline data. It will also address cases of unauthorized boarding by ensuring that every passenger is properly identified before accessing domestic flights.

Keyamo explained that the deployment of the contactless biometric solution will close existing security gaps in the aviation system, particularly those that allow individuals to bypass standard identification procedures.

The Federal Government noted that the initiative reflects its commitment to modernising airport operations through technology-driven solutions that improve safety, efficiency, and accountability across the aviation value chain.
