FG Reaffirms Support for USDA Food for Progress Programme to Boost Nigeria’s Fisheries, Aquaculture
The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food for Progress Programme in Nigeria, describing the initiative as a strategic intervention capable of strengthening the country’s fisheries and aquaculture value chain.
The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy (FMMBE), Fatima Sugra Mahmood, stated this in Abuja when she received a delegation from Partners of the Americas, the implementing partner for the programme in Nigeria, led by Gustavo Galdo.
Mahmood, according to a statement issued by the Ministry’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Anastasia Ogbonna, assured the delegation of the Federal Government’s readiness to provide the necessary policy direction, institutional support and coordination required for the successful implementation of the programme.
She said the initiative aligned with the government’s efforts to unlock the potential of Nigeria’s marine and blue economy, improve livelihoods and strengthen food security.
The Permanent Secretary further emphasised the importance of collaboration among government institutions, development partners and stakeholders in achieving sustainable growth in the fisheries and aquaculture sector.
Speaking earlier, the leader of the Partners of the Americas delegation, Gustavo Galdo, explained that the Food for Progress Programme is designed to improve agricultural productivity and expand trade opportunities in developing countries.
He noted that the programme’s focus on fisheries and aquaculture in Nigeria would contribute to improved livelihoods, greater access to affordable protein and stronger, more resilient food systems.
Galdo disclosed that baseline studies are currently underway to provide the evidence needed to guide targeted interventions and ensure that programme activities effectively address identified gaps and opportunities within Nigeria’s fisheries and aquaculture sector.
The Federal Government’s support for the initiative is expected to strengthen sectoral capacity, promote sustainable fisheries development and unlock new economic opportunities across Nigeria’s marine and blue economy.
